Pioneer stories: 60s Ford Anglias.
28th February:
The latest episode in our Pioneer stories series about Ford Anglias of Yesteryear today features 1960s Ford Anglias (picture: Russ Ward's street legal Jag/Pop - Ken Robbins photo).

In this part of Ford Anglias of Yesteryear we take a look at some of the Anglias for which we have been unable to find and make contact with the original Pioneers who built and raced them, or where they have unfortunately passed away. Some of those already published we’ve managed to contact due to the great help of Mick Gleadow who was able to find their details from an ancestral site that he subscribes to.

For all the stories so far published, special thanks go to John Hunt for doing the initial interviews with each Pioneer, travelling 100s of miles all over the UK, Nick Pettitt for his research and editorial work, Clive Rooms for his behind-the-scenes endless research, Chris Dossett for his work on one particular story which is to be published in the next few weeks and Simon Groves for the final layouts and for publishing the stories on Eurodragster (you're welcome - Editor.

Nick and Clive have found as much information as they can about the remaining Anglias that raced in the 1960s. A couple of those featured here we did speak to but they preferred not to go back to the past which we fully respect and therefore have not covered their own personal stories. Should anyone reading this know of or is able find out the whereabouts of anyone mentioned in this part, we'd be very pleased to hear from you. Our story of 60s Ford Anglias is at this link. You can see our list of Pioneer stories at this link or by clicking on the link in the main menu.

Double duties for Jayne.
28th February: Many thanks to ET Bike and Funny Car racer Jayne Kay for sending an update on her exciting plans for 2022:

"I’m really excited to be driving for Rob Elsom this year in his Nostalgia Funny Car. It’s always been a dream of mine to race in the class, and it’s an honour to be to given the opportunity to compete in such a great car.

"I will be completing some test runs at Easter weekend, and hopefully tick off a few passes needed for my licence. After that, the plan is to compete in the 2022 NFC season.

"I will also be competing on the drag bike at the weekends that don’t conflict with NFC. I’m really excited for the challenge of racing in both classes this year, it’s definitely going to be fun doing a mix of riding and driving with some great people!

"Also a thank you to Fuchs Silkolene for their continued support, as they sponsor us for another season."

Readers will recall that after a career in Junior Dragster from 2005 to 2008, Jayne got a Funny Car licence in 2010 aged 16, raced from 2010 to 2015 in Super Pro ET in her Pink Lady Racing Dodge Avenger methanol Funny Car, followed by a blown alky altered in 2014. Renewing her FC licence in 2017, she brought out her ET Bike in 2020. You can read more at her web site jaynekay.com. Jayne's involvement in Rob's NFC replaces Joe Bond's participation previously reported, Joe continuing to race his Nuthin Two Fancy slingshot in the Supercharged Outlaws.

Swift snippets.
28th February: Happy Birthday for today to Nitro FM producer and AMP Audio Solutions technical guru Julian Parsons, NitrOlympX race director and leader of the sport in Germany Jerry Lackey, VWDRC chair and VW Pro racer Luke Stevenson and former Super Twin Top Gas racer and Santa Pod bike scrutineer Les Harris. Have a great day all, and to Luke, the end of your self-imposed two day alcohol ban.

Mike Boyd.
27th February:
We were shocked and saddened to hear of the death of Winged Express Fuel Altered racer Mike Boyd who passed away on 22nd February aged 64. Although Mike never raced in Europe, he was a great friend to many who do so, particularly teams and also fans who made the trip to the California Hot Rod Reunion and March Meet at Famoso Dragstrip, Bakersfield.

The son of nostalgia Top Fuel racer Jimmy Boyd (best known for his Red Turkey car which he originally crashed at Lions but he later rebuilt), Mike's racing career begain in the late 1980’s when he got involved with the Nitro Warrior slingshot AA/FD dragster which he built just when nostalgia Top Fuel was getting established. Nitro Warrior ran at Palmdale and some of the early California Hot Rod Reunions.

Mike's big break came early in his driving career. In 1994 he met Mousie Marcellus, crew chief and co-owner with Wild Willie Borsch of the legendary Winged Express AA/FA until Willie passed away in 1991. Mike took the car down the track, the initial pass without a parachute, and immediately afterwards took it home and looked after it for the rest of his life with Mousie still involved until his death in October 2020. Mike also occasionally ran Nitro Warrior until 2010, and also had a ride in Mike Sullivan's transformer AA/FA Nitro Warrior in 2007-8, going 5.43/274 which still stands as the class's track record at Famoso.

Mike made thousands of passes in Winged Express on his own money (he worked in aerospace) with support from Bob MacCrae. He made upgrades to the car gradually, but kept the car basically the same as when he first had it, with a cast 392ci iron engine for many years before getting a billet Donovan, and just the addition of a few bars to the cage. His burnouts were long and wild, sometimes ending up in the other lane, and he refused to lift on a pass. He said "I didn't want to got too quick as the car has a temper in it". Most of the time the car had the front wheels in the air with Mike holding the centre of the car's circular steering wheel, and the car was a thrilling sight at speeds up to 212mph.

Mike brought the Winged Express to NHRA National Events for demo passes and memorably was part of the first ever four-wide Fuel Altered race at Las Vegas in 2018 with Ron Hope, Randy Bradford and Kyle Hough.

Mike was a three time cancer survivor, with spinal stenosis arising from the disease, but bravely fought against all the pain to put on a great and memorable show, his religious faith giving him mental strength and a love of weightlifting helping him physically.

Mike agreed with Linda Marcellus, Mousie's daughter that the Winged Express will be placed in a museum. We send our deepest condolences to Mike's friends and family.

With acknowledgements to the excellent interview by Drag Racing's Golden Era 60s to the 80s Facebook page's Randy Herpel.

Lydden Hill No Prep Nationals entry open.
27th February: Thanks to No Prep Nationals organiser Paul Marston who has sent an update on the No Prep Nationals Custom Cup at Lydden Hill on 24th-26th July.

The No Prep Nationals have been invited back to Lydden Hill motor racing circuit to stage another event. 2021 saw us run a daily driver No Prep race at very short notice, the Lydden Hill management liked what they saw and invited us back.

We will be staging the event over the weekend of Saturday 23rd to Sunday 24th July, the event will be known at the No Prep Nationals Custom Cup, so anyone interested, competitors or spectators alike can make a weekend of it. We are part of a variety of motorsport disciplines. Our day of racing is Sunday, there are other circuit racing classes featured on track Saturday. We will endeavour to get a test session late Saturday for any teams who have already arrived.

The classes we will run are Daily Driver, Small Tyre and Big Tyre. The track distance is just a hair under 1/8th mile, there is a short straight for braking then a large hairpin, remember this is a circuit, not an airfield or a purpose built dragstrip. There is also a noise limit at Lydden Hill, like there is at nearly every motor racing circuit in the country nowadays. The limit is 105dbA, which means you WILL need at least a pair of exhaust boxes. Anyone unsure of how to measure this, please let me know. I can see no reason why anyone would fail the noise test providing they have mufflers. The objective of this weekend is to have alot of fun with some competitive racing. Yes you will need a decent set of brakes, but you have those anyway right?

There will be good prize money and the format is designed to give everyone a lot of track time. Pairings will be drawn out of the hat for every race. The intention is for everyone to get eight races in each class, so you are going to be busy. These will be run as a pair of races in each session, so there are four sessions and two races in each.

Regarding the classes, Daily Driver means exactly that, full interior, taxed, MOT’d, insured, road tyres, no trailers etc. We will be the final judges on eligibility for this class, so no cheating, enter your correct class please. You will need a crash helmet, UK Driving License, all cars will be scrutineered and noise tested. Entry fees, etc will be announced soon, within a week.

Small Tyre and Big Tyre are pretty self explanatory, if you need to go over the rules, simply check out the No Prep FB Page.

The Custom Cup is a great event, something for everyone, Lydden Hill is a beautiful circuit set in the Kent countryside, there will be evening entertainment. Everyone who attended the first event really enjoyed it, we all look forward to our return.

For more details Just go to the Lydden Hill website and select custom cup for spectator ticket booking. The weekend adult ticket with camping is a very reasonable £25.00.

We would like to thank Lydden Hill management for hosting us and look forward to a great weekend at Lydden Hill Race Circuit, Wootton, Canterbury, Kent CT4 6ET.

Tim Hines.
26th February:
We were greatly saddened to hear that UK Ford doorslammer racer, constructor and engineer Tim Hines passed away on Monday 21st February peacefully with his family by his side.

Lee Huxley wrote: "Tim was one of the good guys and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him especially the Huxleys and the Dark Horse Drag Racing Team. Sending lots of love to his family at this sad time. I will confirm the funeral arrangements once they have been announced for anyone wishing to attend."

Marc Huxley added: "Tim was a huge inspiration to me and a huge help with me doing fabrication and engineering bits for me.. He even came to my unit to use some of my tooling but for me the best Tim I seen was him at racing giving advice and telling me stories of his Twin Cam Mk1 Escort and upsetting police back in the day.. You will be dearly missed by me and the family let alone family and racers."

Picture credits: Escort Mk2 - Jerry Cookson, Sierra - Doug McDiarmid

In his drag racing career Tim Hines was mainly known for racing Fords – a Ford Escort Mk1 that ran in the well subscribed Street Machine/JWR Rover V8 Championship from its inception in 1986, and then in Pro Modified where he joined the class in 1988, starting with an Escort Mk2 with a 460ci Ford engine and then a Sierra in 1990-2, both great looking cars that went on to have long histories with other racers. Tim retired from driving at the end of 1992 but was a regular in the pits thereafter.

Tim worked on both race car construction and engines and had a fine reputation for giving advice to many UK racers. We send our deepest condolences to Tim's friends and family.

SPR Festival of Power preview.
26th February: Santa Pod Raceway’s Festival of Power will reclaim its traditional Easter date to launch 2022’s UK championship drag racing season, alongside the Festival’s usual array of vibrant family entertainments.

For the past two years, thanks to Covid, the Easter weekend has been off-limits. In 2021, the event – billed as the Festival of Power Unlocked – took place in June to celebrate the unlocking of national restrictions. 2020’s Festival of Power was cancelled altogether.

2022’s season will kick off with a bang, and a flash, as the Festival of Power spotlights the spectacular Jet Cars. Five British fire-breathing Jets are booked to light up the track, while a sixth flame-thrower from France warms the crowds in the Live Action Arena.

Pictures: Julian Webb’s Split Second and Andy Robinson’s Camaro, courtesy Santa Pod Raceway.

The championship racing programme is headed by the unruly Pro Mods contesting the opening round of the Motorsport UK British Drag Racing Championship, with a full supporting cast of cars and motorcycles battling for an early lead in their respective UK title chases.

There’ll be a 10,000-horsepower Top Fuel Dragster or two limbering up for the FIA European season ahead, while nitro-fuelled Funny Cars add to the ground-shaking clamour. Access to the pits is open and free for a close-up look at these most powerful racing machines on the planet.

Monster Trucks and stunt driving and riding shows feature alongside the French Jet in the Live Action Arena. Magic, escapology, musical comedy and robotic dancing are among the Variety Marquee’s attractions. Funfair rides, helicopter flights, a circus skills workshop and children’s sideshows all help create a lively family day out over the Easter weekend.

The Festival of Power takes place at Santa Pod Raceway, near Wellingborough NN29 7XA, from Friday 15 th to Sunday 17 th April. Full event details are available at the Santa Pod website.

Adult ticket prices, booked in advance, begin at £30 per day, with children aged 5 to 15 at £5 each. Tickets can be booked online at www.santapodtickets.com or by telephoning 01234 782828.

No FIA classes at FHRA Nitro Nationals.
26th February: The Finnish Hot Rod Association today published the following announcement regarding the Nitro Nationals 29th June-2nd July:

"In view of the FIA European Championship race for cars, the FHRA board has identified the situation due to the multiple effects of the Covid Pandemic as not giving a realistic chance of organizing the race.

"The safety barrier work required for the European Championships in the Kauhava track is really demanding in terms of schedule and money. Making the required changes well in advance of the competition is so challenging that we will need to focus on these investments and workload on a later date. We will continue in cooperation with the FIA for the season 2023.

"Of course, other important events are planned on the track, and the FHRA board decided that it would be more sensible to advance them from an economic point of view at the moment. Track improvement and repair work has been at a standstill during the pandemic and now is the time to start this work sensibly, simultaneously and on time.

"Nitro Nationals 2022 is still planned as a full Finnish Championship Series, as well as a Summit Racing EDRS Series race, with additional groups."

Information needed for Junior Dragster website.
26th February: Junior Dragster web master Wayne Jackson requests all Junior Dragster teams and drivers now visit the website www.lucasoiljuniordragster.com website and download the team sample document page (pdf format), complete it and send the completed document and photos to [email protected].

Wayne reports there is a predicted 30 car entry for 2022 and he would be appreciative if teams can kindly complete and send their document to him as soon as possible to get the website up and running.

Trakbytes update.
26th February: Many thanks to webmaster Chris Dossett of the excellent Trakbytes website who has posted his latest update to the comprehensive information contained, in an easy to view format:

The Trakbytes website has just been updated with another selection of all the latest news on things that happened decades ago. This time the new material spans the years 1964 to 1993 and also features a host of programme covers from the Clive Rooms collection and some advertising posters sent in by Jerry Cookson.

There are some corrections (always welcome, don’t be shy), some updates to some of the Hall Of Fame entries, and a second request for help on the “Help Us Find” page regarding a Dave Woodgate who was in some way involved in Drag himRacing in the late seventies, and worked at Mann Egerton in Derby in 1978. Thanks to Andy Marrs the list of strip records at Santa Pod on the “Special Features” page has been brought bang up to date, a concept that is somewhat unfamiliar at Trakbytes.

There is also the first in a series of scrapbooks from an unknown contributor that I will be uploading over the next few updates. This first volume covers the years 1964 to 1971 and includes 57 PDF files of magazine and news cuttings from various publications. Among the subjects covered in these cuttings are the Dragfests, JWR's Hustler, Santa Pod's Wheelie Stingray, Hemini, The Good Vibrations Anglia, The quest for 200mph and many more articles and race reports. Volume Two in this series will be added on the next update.

As always I encourage readers to submit any details or race reports that are missing, or provide corrections for anything contained in the archive that they feel may be wrong.

Pioneer stories: Derek Benbow.
21st February:
Our Pioneer stories about Ford Anglias of Yesteryear today features 1960s and 70s racer Derek Benbow.

As Monday's episode told, Derek Benbow with partner John Fullerton built a Ford Pop called Orange Crate which came out in 1967. They then built Turtle T, running it from 1968 through 1969, then rebuilding it for 1970. After selling the rolling chassis to the Stones family who renamed it Tee Rat, Derek and John then built an injected nitro slingshot dragster, running it until 1973 following which it was sold to Tony Froome who ran it as Nitromania. The pair parted ways and over the course of time, John found it difficult to track Derek down - until January 2022.

John Hunt writes: "We had no leads at the time on the whereabouts of John's partner Derek Benbow. Then Mick Gleadow who uses an ancestral website, working with very little information, managed to find a current address for Derek. John went to visit and it turned out to be correct. I then met up with Derek Benbow and John Fullerton at John’s house in Tamworth on Saturday January 29th 2022 to get Derek's side of the story. He also brought along a pack of photos, unseen for 50 years."

Derek Benbow's story is at this link. You can see our list of Pioneer stories at this link or by clicking on the link in the main menu.

Eurodragster.com thanks John for providing his story and John Hunt and Nick Pettitt for help with editing and proof reading the feature and making archive images available, and Clive Rooms for providing further information.

The Machine that Changed British Motorsport.
25th February: Former Santa Pod Raceway announcer, British Drag Racing & Hot Rod Association chairman and motorport author Brian Taylor has announced the publication of his book on the pioneering Allard Chrysler dragster and its restoration:

I’m excited to announce that my latest non-fiction book – The Machine that Changed British Motorsport – is to be published by the Bloomsbury, London- based LR Price Publications. It is the complete story of Sydney Allard’s 1961 Allard Chrysler dragster – owned by the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu; its concept in the early 1960s, its build, its racing history, its demise and finally its eight year restoration by enthusiasts that commenced in 2008 and was completed in 2016. With Pink Floyd drummer and classic car enthusiast Nick Mason as the group’s UK Patron and Project 1320 Chair Traci Hrudka our Patron in the USA, how could the restoration not succeed? Well researched text supported by many historic photographic images (including some rare early colour photographs), the book is a must for all motorsport and classic car enthusiasts. They can sit down and relive the story of how British sports car manufacturer and racer Sydney Allard built a unique machine that created a completely new branch of motorsport in the UK and Europe.

A past chairman of the British Drag Racing & Hot Rod Association and a fan of the sport since 1964, Brian Taylor started commentating on drag racing in 1970 and became the ‘voice of the sport’ at Custom Car Shows and Europe’s premier drag strip, Santa Pod Raceway, throughout that decade. He wrote articles on drag racing for magazines in the UK, the USA and Sweden, and voiced-over several films, commercials and audio cassettes covering the sport.

After visiting California in 1977 and meeting Wally Parks and Carl Olson of the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA), he launched British drag racing’s first contingency sponsorship scheme, in the process, changing the eliminations structure to more closely reflect that promoted by the NHRA and the Swedish Hot Rod Association (SHRA).

All this was as a hobby because he had a full time sales career in the automotive industry. And in this regard, 1979 he joined John Woolfe Racing Limited as Publicity Manager and then Marketing Manager. So his link with drag racing continued as a major sponsor because the company was the UK’s largest importer of parts for American vehicles.

He moved on in 1984, building a career in marketing with major automotive businesses such as the Lonrho-owned Dutton-Forshaw Motor Group (one of the UK’s largest multi-franchised dealer chains) and the Pirelli-owned Central Tyre Company (one of the country’s largest tyre and exhaust centre chains) - becoming Marketing Director for both businesses. He commenced a full time writing career in 1990, becoming a Member of the Guild of Motoring Writers and one of the UK’s most influential aftermarket journalists and researchers, editing four best practice magazines for Sewells International, creating the well-respected Castrol Car Service Trend Tracker report in 1994 and speaking at conferences in Germany, Belgium, Portugal, Spain, Greece, Crete, Denmark, Southern Ireland, France, the USA and all over the UK.

But he continued his interest in drag racing and acted as Marketing Consultant for John Woolfe Racing Limited. In 2007, after noticing a number of inaccurate social media postings about the beginnings of drag racing in the UK, he decided to research and write down the sport’s history. His book Crazy Horses – the history of British drag racing was published by Haynes Publishing in 2009.

Although the 1961 Allard Chrysler dragster is an important part of that exciting story, much of the car’s racing history, or the important role played by Sydney Allard has still not been documented in detail in a single book, apart from in a one-off detailed report Brian prepared for the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu; now held in the their library. The dragster was on display at the museum who owned it, but it was far from complete back in 2007. The sleek body panels hid a multitude of sins– including the absence of an engine.

It truly is a machine that was ‘game-changing’ in British motorsport terms, so Brian decided to form the Allard Chrysler Action Group to restore the car to working order. The detailed document in the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu library – Restoration of a Legend - is part of the project which took nearly ten years to complete.

By its nature that document is very detailed and long, so in 2017 he decided to collate the information for a separate book. The Machine that changed British Motorsport is that book. It uses additional historical content gathered during research when preparing Crazy Horses – much of it previously un-published – and more recent revelations that have come to light since the car’s complete restoration. Some of the story of the car’s racing history and its restoration has appeared in a series of on-line news letters that Brian published to keep people up to date with the project’s progress. Some of the photos may be slightly grainy. But this is history in the making when the subject matter is sometimes more important than image quality.

Regarding the restoration process, not often do you get the chance to be part of the restoration team carrying out the work by just reading a book. But that is what Brian has strived to achieve in Part II of the book. Unless you have funding to employ a specialist restorer, recreating history by restoration is normally a lonely and secret affair with just the end product a tribute to the work carried out. Brian thought it important to try and recreate the highs and lows experienced by those involved in the project, and get across the emotional ties of the team to the machine they were working on and Sydney Allard’s pivotal role in British drag racing.

As the work progressed there were doubts about some of the decisions made with different advice coming from different respected sources. Have we got it right? If we are wrong how do we get out of it? Unless you experience this sort of journey you will be unaware of the high level of commitment required to overcome negativity and keep things moving along; commitment that lasted over several years in this case. Commitment that involved personal costs in finance and time; all for a machine they did not own apart from emotional ownership. Constant focus on the end game was the secret of success. In truth and in spirit, involvement in a project such as this is an adventurer. An adventurous journey through time. Hopefully the reader will get a small taste of this experience and feel the satisfaction derived from treasuring the past by keeping it alive. Enjoy the ride.

Brian told us "Whilst we are awaiting the publishing date and pricing details from the publisher, I will be announcing these in due course on my Facebook Page or search The Machine that Changed British Motorsport."

SFI Europe inspection services for 2022.
24th February:
Many thanks to SFI President Jennifer Faye who has written with the plans for SFI Inspections in 2022 which are taking place at Santa Pod Raceway on 21st March and at ME Racing in Borlange Sweden on 18th-22nd March:

We are happy to announce that SFI will be providing the important annual safety inspections and recertifications of parts for European drag racers at local sites this year. Unfortunately, due to logistical challenges, we will not be able to hold the full SFI Tour where we visit four different countries in a short period of time. For 2022, we are planning inspection services at two different sites in Europe.

One inspection site will be at ME Racing in Borlange Sweden on 18th-22nd March. Parts must be registered and sent to ME Racing prior to those dates to minimize contact. Further details and online registration may be found at this link.

The other inspection site will be Santa Pod Raceway on Monday, 21st March. Racers and team personnel may bring parts starting at 09:00. If you are unable to attend SFI UK Day on 21st March, there is also the opportunity to bring your parts to Robinson Race Cars that week, 22nd-25th March, by appointment only. Please contact Robinson Race Cars at [email protected] for arrangements.

Here are the items that can be recertified:

SFI 1.1-1.5 Clutch Assemblies

Alex bats 100.
23rd February: In 1988, Tony Thacker left the cold and wet climes of the UK to emigrate to the US and become editor/publisher of SEMA News. After 10 years with SEMA, Tony went freelance and worked for a number of hot rod builders including Boyd Coddington and Peter Chapouris. In 1997, Tony became Marketing Director of SO-CAL Speed Shop now located on on Historic Route 66 in Upland, Southern California for the next nine years. Here he pays tribute to his friend and colleague Alex Xydias who reaches his centenary on 22nd March. To celebrate, friends and colleagues held a gathering yesterday at the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum:

Pictures by Tony Thacker: Alex and Greg Sharp, Curator of Wally Parks Museum; Alex takes the mic; Bruce Meyer, owner of the SO-CAL BellyTank.

At 100 years old you’re bound to have more than a few chapters to your book of life and Alex Xydias (pronounced is hideous), founder of the So-Cal Speed Shop, is no exception. His father was an early Hollywood silent movie producer but due to illness he missed the introduction of talkies and the family fell on hard times. At an early age Alex learned how cruel life could be: one minute you’re on the red carpet the next your mom is taking in lodgers.

High school was probably equally difficult as he attended Bancroft Junior High with the likes of Judy Garland and Jason Robards. Then it was on to Fairfax High with the likes of Mickey Rooney and Ricardo Montalban while mom became ‘Madame X’ reading fortunes to the movie set in a restaurant.

Alex, meanwhile, got into hot rods but an expired license earned him time in the pokey and before he knew it he was in the Army Air Corps. His hot rod on blocks, he was sent to Luke Field, Phoenix, AZ where he worked on AT-6s. Next, it was Buffalo, NY for P-40 training and then finally B-17 school in Las Vegas where he became a flight engineer and gunner.

Suddenly though, the WWII was over and like all young men Alex, who had married childhood sweetheart Betty, wondered how to make a living—he was 23. Madame X, also known as mom, loaned him $100 and with a few bucks of his own he ventured over the Hollywood Hills and opened the So-Cal Speed Shop at 1806 N. Olive Ave., Burbank. It was a tiny shop and Alex soon moved to a Sears’ prefab building at the appropriately named 1104 Victory Blvd.

Although completely untrained, Alex had a canny instinct for marketing understanding immediately that a win on Sunday meant a sale on Monday. With the help of many friends his now famous red and white racecars littered the dry lakes and drag strips of southern California. At Bonneville they raced ‘The World’s Fastest Hot Rod’ and took the ‘Hot Rod’ trophy.

Pictures: Chapouirs family having fun; Don Prudhomme front left; Gentleman Joe Schubeck.

Unfortunately, for Alex, and many others, the flathead Ford V-8 was being eclipsed by the new-fangled ohvs. Things would never be the same and so Alex picked up a 16mm movie camera. Long before Sky Sports, Alex filmed motorsports from Bonneville to Indianapolis to Sebring hustling back and forth across the US recording races before the laborious task of editing.

Sadly, Alex was way ahead of the curve this time and he discovered that folks were just not ready to pay to watch motorsports in a movie theater. Now, his films are precious screen captures of the glory days of racing in the fifties.

In 1963, Alex shuttered the So-Cal Speed Shop and began a new chapter when he joined the staff of Petersen Publishing. He had been friends with Wally Parks and Robert E. Petersen since ‘Pete’ launched Hot Rod in 1948, heck, he advertised in the very first issue. He began as editor of Car Craft magazine but after a year he moved over to Petersen’s trade publication Hot Rod Industry News (HRIN) first as editor and later as publisher.

The first official SEMA trade show was held in 1967 under the cold and damp grandstands of Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium—there were 98 exhibitor booths and 3,000 attendees. It was working for Petersen on HRIN that Alex honed his trade show skills, heck he knew everybody in the industry, and positioned himself for the next chapter.

After 12 years, Alex left Petersen and joined forces with Mickey Thompson who had founded Southern California Off Road Enthusiasts (SCORE) in 1973 with the intention of maintaining off-road racing in Baja. The events lead naturally to the SCORE International Off-Road Trade Show that Alex ran in partnership with Mickey.

Sadly, in March 1988 Mickey and his wife Trudy were brutally murdered in the driveway of their house in Bradbury, CA. Alex was 66 and decided to retire but little did he know his career was far from over.

Ever the canny promoter, Alex continued to produce commemorative So-Cal Speed Shop catalogs and hold reunions for his friends. Then, in 1997, out of the blue his friend Pete Chapouris called to say he’d had an epiphany. His hot rod business PC3g was struggling with identity and Pete wondered if there was a way he could resurrect the So-Cal Speed Shop. Because Alex had protected the name for all those years with catalogs, reunions, etc., it was a simple formality to license the iconic brand.

Pictures: Alex in his So-Cal Tank; SO-CAL Team at El Mirage in 2003; Tank wins Dean Batchelor Trophy at Pebble Beach.

The new, upper case SO-CAL was officially launched at the California Hot Rod Reunion in November 1997 and to say it took off like a Space-X rocket would be an understatement. Pete was in the right place at the right time when people had tired of the cookie-cutter Hot Rods by Boyd and yearned for something more traditional. Alex was 75 and yet had the enthusiasm and energy of a man 20 years younger and no matter what the event or where, he was there waving the SO-CAL flag.

Without doubt one of the highlights of the reborn SO-CAL was an association with GM to return to Alex’s lakes racing roots and field a team of GM-powered, SO-CAL-liveried land speed racers. Included in the fleet was a concept belly tank as well as two race tanks that soon set land speed records. Ironically, success on the salt came 60 years after Alex had first launched the speed shop.

Twernt over yet though. In 2011, Alex was approached to lend his name to the Alex Xydias Center for Automotive Arts (AXC). Based at Fairplex Pomona (home of the Winternationals and World Finals), AXC was a component of the Fairplex’s Career & Technical Education Center and comprised a series of auto shop classes targeted to help young people develop skills for a viable career in the automotive industry. As you would expect, Alex was not a passive name lender, he attended every committee meeting and many other events promoting the program until Covid affected everything. He was also extremely active in fund raising, helping to bring in the all-important dollars needed to fund such an undertaking.

After 100 years rocketing about the sun Alex Xydias has done more in each chapter of his life than most of us can hope to do in a whole lifetime. It makes you tired just thinking about it - but not Alex.

The prize fund will be raised by 2% as is the norm.

As mentioned in Keith Bartlett's speech at the SPRC Dinner Dance and Trophy Presentation, the SPR shutdown area is in the process of being replaced. Also, the start line area to approx. 150 feet beyond has been ground to give the surface a coarser finish, this will help to improve the adhesion of rubber to the surface. The work was carried out by James Oliver, a fellow racer and concrete specialist, to whom we are indebted for his help and advice.

Later in the year, hopefully mid-March, there will be additional lighting added to the shutdown area, to help improve visibility during events later in the year, especially at the European Finals night-time qualifying sessions.

Racers will have noticed that electric costs have gone up significantly, this is due to a change in government policy on red diesel. Plant equipment, generators and a slew of other equipment are now no longer permitted to use red diesel for fuel, these pieces of equipment must now run on white diesel which is the same price as at the petrol pumps, therefore we have no other option but to increase the cost of electricity at the track. However, the cost for a 2-3 or 4 day event with the addition of early switch-on during pitting days etc, will still be much lower than running generators and also so much quieter during the evenings.

There has also been an increase in entry fees across the board, for which we apologise, but our hands are tied due to massive rises in insurance; the ACU alone have had to raise their insurance by 40% for all events, and that’s something as a track and club we cannot absorb. Increases are not limited to insurance, it appears everything we purchase at present has gone up in price in some way, and therefore we must pass these costs on.

OTHER ITEMS

Super Twin Top Gas will not be contested as a class in 2022, this is unfortunately due to very low numbers over the past 3-4 years, we do however reserve the right to bring the class back in later years, should there be a significant increase in STTG racer numbers. The current Racers will be able to compete in ET Bike for the foreseeable future, so we are not removing the opportunity for the STTG Guys to race their machines, and hope to see more of them in the future.

Could all teams intending to field more than one driver or rider for the same vehicle for 2022 please email Yvonne Tramm at [email protected] with the team driver or rider details; this must be completed before the Festival of Power please.

For 2022, the Covid signing on procedure will now revert to our normal signing on, in that every racer and crew member who will require a startline pass must now sign on in the normal manner at the Signing On Office, this must be done prior to scrutineering for all riders and drivers and before your first qualifying pass for all crew members, there are no exceptions.

JUNIOR DRAGSTER DRIVERS FROM FEBRUARY 2022

Any Junior Dragster competitor driving for the first time regardless of age must either have previous documented driving experience (karting or similar or a driving licence for older competitors)

If not, they must complete their first runs on the racetrack in a Stock Junior Dragster, this is to confirm their ability and give them the opportunity to learn their race craft under less pressure, once they have completed 3 runs and proven to be capable, they can then move on to a Dragster/Funny Car within the age/ET limit of the driver should they wish to do so.

COMPETITION ELIMINATOR

Following discussion regarding Competition Eliminator Indexes, the DD/AT index for 2022 going forward will be 7.80 this will take effect from the Festival of Power 2022.

Specific details on these classes will follow shortly; we would like to add that these indexes are a start point and we reserve the right to alter these indexes at the end of the 2022 season should we see fit.

SPRC will also be honouring the 2021 National Championship winners free entry (providing the classes have met the minimum entry requirements in 2021) for 2022 in the following classes: Comp Eliminator, Street Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Pro, Pro ET, Sportsman ET, Junior Dragster, VW Pro, VW Sportsman, Funny Bike, Super Street Bike, 9.50 Bike, ET Bike.

Jeff and Belinda Bull asked that we look into a trial for a 7.60 index heads up Doorslammer class. Following an comprehensive discussion regarding the class and regulations, the decision was taken to run the class at the Green Light Nationals on 20th-21st August 2022; the entry from will be changed to accommodate the class. Please note that the class will run under Motorsport UK permit and therefore all cars entering must have the correct in-date chassis tag to enter, and drivers must have a Motorsport UK Race licence. for more details on the class and regulations please contact Jeff Bull at [email protected].

Robin Orthodoxou asked if the Electromotion system was available to Comp Eliminator vehicles. It was explained that the system was available at all National and International events, and although not a requirement for all Comp classes (Pro Modified being the exception) you can of course add the system to your vehicle should you wish. The correct 1/4 mile frequency data is available upon request for Racers.

A discussion was made regarding Motorcycle front and rear brake discs, and the disparity between the SPRC White book and ACU Rule book, elements of this are due to the later production of the ACU book, but not all, there has also been an oversight on our (SPRC's) part.

To clarify, there is a discrepancy regarding front and rear brakes in some classes, for all ACU classes (Top Fuel Bike, Funny Bike, Comp Bike, Super Street Bike and Junior Drag bike). The ACU rule book must be followed, for 8.50, 9.50. ET Bike the White book rules or the ACU rules may be followed, but you must conform to one or the other, if your bike does not conform to either rulebook then it is not or was never legal according to the rule books, therefore the bike must be brought up to standard before the first round of competition in 2022. The SPRC white book will be made to match the ACU rule book by 2024, giving those who match the SPRC White book 2 years to comply with the ACU rule book.

Any queries on this information should be passed to Ian Marshall directly at [email protected].

Pioneer stories: John Fullerton.
21st February: Our Pioneer stories about Ford Anglias of Yesteryear today features 1960s and 70s racer John Fullerton.

John Fullerton attended the 1964 Drag Festival and using skills acquired from his day job, built with partner Derek Benbow a Ford Pop called Orange Crate which came out in 1967. They then bought a turtle T body from Geoff Jago and built Turtle T, running it from 1968 through 1969, then rebuilding it for 1970. After selling the rolling chassis to the Stones family who renamed it Tee Rat, John and Derek then built an injected nitro slingshot dragster, running it until 1973 following which it was sold to Tony Froome who ran it as Nitromania. The pair parted ways and over the course of time, John found it difficult to track Derek down...

John Fullerton's story is at this link. You can see our list of Pioneer stories at this link or by clicking on the link in the main menu.

Eurodragster.com thanks John for providing his story and John Hunt and Nick Pettitt for help with editing and proof reading the feature and making archive images available, and Clive Rooms for providing further information.

JT: the best cars.
21st February: Many thanks to Pro Modified and Pro ET racer John Tebenham, who has had a busy winter, for bringing us up to date on his plans for the season. He will have two cars, but which cars, and which drivers are up for grabs?

"Sometimes you can’t give it away. We have the best cars, I personally think. As it says, the greatest burnout Ford Pop with the fantastic I.C.E. engine Crew Killer is all loaded and ready for action. And my crazy Pro Mod, The Fabulous Lightning McQueen, is nearly back together. So when I started to build my new two car team, we really tried to get the best people involved like Robinson Race Cars. I personally think Luke is the man in Europe for race car tuning. I know everyone says yeah, point it, but these cars start wheel spinning at 200 mph, they are crazy, buy one and you will love it.

I had a chat to Paul Marston and the conversation went like this, you crew for my Pop for a year and you can have my Pro Mod, all crew, for free for a day, if you bang it that’s my problem. Paul is a hero of this sport, but a free five second Pro Mod for the day, if he doesn’t, my other hero, Keith Bartlett, it’s for free, all you have too do is press the button. Oh yeah, sideways at 180 mph in the dark at 9,600 revs - crazy.

And on to the next stage of my mad life. We want to have a go at Nitro Funny Car where my other two heroes said they will help, Liam and of corse Bad Barry Sheavills.

Colin's comprehensive collection.
21st February: Santa Pod Commentator Colin Theobald has been in touch about a pastime which has become an outright obsession, that also graces his home:

What to do with your spare time when the racing season is over and you are waiting for parts to finish the car? Well, for me it went from collecting a few models here and there, sometimes the odd collection but in the last few years I’ve really got into collecting diecast drag racing models and other memorabilia. I didn’t plan it, it just sort of happened. During lockdowns I really started getting into this hobby, but in the last 9 months however it’s become an addiction.

I’ve been so fortunate to obtain some fantastic models and meet some incredible people. It’s got to daily routine now where I’m scouring the internet looking for more, then when I find them the messaging starts. Fortunately I’ve reached a stage where I’m now contacted by people looking to sell a few or an entire collection due to house moves, sat in boxes in the loft and not wanted anymore and other reasons.

So many people ask to see pictures of them so for the readers of Eurodragster.com, here’s a couple of pictures of the current collection. This is just some of the models, as there are more display cabinets on the way to display more. I do sometimes end up with duplicates and now have a list of people looking for various models so they always find good homes.

Hope you like the pictures, don’t forget if you have any drag racing diecasts and other memorabilia I’d always be interested, just message me through Facebook.

It will be on the 10th 11th of Feb with more marquees, Drag Race demos and much, much more.

Street Week Sweden tracks announced.
20th February: Following the news on 15th February that Street Week Sweden will be taking place from 10th-16th July 2022, the full list of tracks in Sweden's premier drag and drive event Street Week Sweden have been announced:

Bråvalla Raceway Inspection, Sunday (address: Flygvingevägen 1, 602 09 Norrköping)
Bråvalla Raceway, Monday
Dala-Järna, Tuesday (address: Flygfätsvägen, 78050 Dala-Järna)
Färilla Dragway, Wednesday (address: Färila flygfält, Föne bana -H, 82041 Färila)
Orsa Tallhed, Thursday (address: 794 91 Orsa)
Lindesberg, Friday (address: Curlinggatan 1, Lindesberg)
Bråvalla Raceway Finish & Car Show, Banquet Saturday

The organisers announced that Street Week is back with a Street Week Central Swing, ie. we go as far North in Sweden as in Färila, which is in the Ljusdal area.

The structure is exactly the same as the years before. Five competition tracks are visited according to a timetable where the participants must clock as fast a time as possible on a 200-meter track. Between the tracks, the cars are driven for their own machine, where all spare parts and tools that are used must be transported for their own machine.

The result is as much a lifestyle event and rolling car hit as motorsport and endurance racing. All competition activities take place on the five tracks and no one is rewarded for driving too fast on the public roads. On the contrary, penalty time can be added if participants misbehave in traffic.

There are ten check points ie. two a day should be ticked off along the road to the next track and included in the competition procedure. Those of you who have been there before will remember that INGO fuels petrol stations are check points, new for this year is that The DriveZone will have check points where they present themselves and what they can offer you who own an American car.

When the week is over, an average time is made of the participant's lowest run time from each course, where the participants in each class must also have passed all check points for their own machine. It is thus not only important to have the fastest average time from the five tracks, but the car must also function as a transport vehicle between the race tracks.

At each track you will find a market area where, in addition to buying good food, you can meet several of Street Week's sponsors who are happy to show what they are good at.

That Street Week is popular among the participants has been shown from the registration, previous years' quota of 200 participants has been filled within minutes of the registration opening.

Do not miss Street Week Sweden's Central Swing! Registration opens on 27th February 2022 at 10.00 CET (09.00 GMT) and you can register by going to www.razing.se (you are advised to create an account in advance by clicking on 'My Account'). Price per entry is: SEK 8,500 incl. VAT. (driver + codriver).

Classes of cars will be confirmed in due course - 2021 classes are shown on the web site.

20th February: We would like to wish a Happy Birthday to former Street Eliminator racer and builder Ron Haslett, Top Doorslammer racer Anne Britt Nilssen, Pro Modified racer in waiting Steve Rawlings, Junior Dragster dad and former sponsor Andy Wheeler. Have a great day all.

Good luck and stay safe to expat Norwegian Julie Nataas at the NHRA Winternationals who qualified #5 in Top Alcohol Dragster with 5.289/277.20 and won round one of eliminations with the low ET of the event so far, 5.214/276.92. You can follow Julie's progress by going on nhra.com, www.dragracecentral.com or watch on nhra.tv (subscription required).

Former Eurodragster.com editor Tog writes: Readers with long memories will recall that a final weekend of RWYB was put in at Melbourne Raceway last October to facilitate filming of a series for BBC3. Gassed Up is now showing on the channel and the episode in question can be watched via the BBC iPlayer. Younger readers may recognise the names Mist and Chelcee Grimes as the match racers (see picture) whilst former Junior Dragster racer Becky Evans does an excellent job as one of the presenting team and Pro Mod’s own Annie Wallace as ever does herself great credit as one of the guests. For those watching via iPlayer it’s episode 5; readers above the age of maturity, not of course the programme’s target audience, may find their patience tested so if you want to go directly to the footage from Melbourne then scroll forward to about twenty eight minutes although be warned that that will mean missing Annie’s contribution.

Carnet update for international travel.
19th February: Many thanks to
Santa Pod Racers Club Secretary Ian Marshall for sending an update on the requirements that oblige EU racers travelling to the UK, or vice versa, to obtain a ATA Carnet for racing in a different jurisdiction:

As many will know from 2021 an ATA Carnet is now required for you to travel outside the UK or into the UK to race your car or bike; there are a few elements to what is required to access a Carnet but, in most cases, pretty simple and not as expensive as you may think.

I’ll deal first with UK Riders and Drivers looking to go out into the EU or indeed further afield, the rules are virtually the same.

You will need to complete an ATA Carnet to list the items that you will travel with, that’s essentially tools, spares, car or bike, or cars and bikes to reduce costs, you don’t have to list every socket, or spanner, and once you have completed the online form, you only need to alter it year on year if there are changes to your race operation, new car, bike, race truck, spares etc. in the UK we held a Zoom meeting with Paul Williamson of Speed Source, a man with extensive knowledge of the Carnet requirements, what it will cost and how often you need to pay.

The costs are broken down in to two main areas, the cost of the Carnet (about £220-250) and the cost of the insurance to cover the 40% value of your race operation, this for a £50k valuation is approximately £300. The Carnet will allow you to travel outside of the UK up to 12 times within the year that the Carnet is in place (12 months from initial purchase) there is a separate option of a 40% deposit scheme, the owners deposit with the relevant Chamber of Commerce (through Speed Source) 40% of the value of your race operation, if it’s £50k then the amount would be £20K, once the year end of the Carnet comes around and providing the whole of your race operation has returned to the UK you will then receive a full refund of your deposit, not for everyone, but some may have the financial backing to do this and thus save money on the insurance costs.

I would strongly suggest you contact Paul Williamson on 07950 026284 or email [email protected], he is very helpful and will be able to give you chapter and verse on what is and isn’t required.

For European and worldwide Racers, car and bike, I have completed a list of contacts across Europe, Switzerland, Norway and Russia, I’m, hoping that this will give you access to the information you may need, there are links to the Carnet forms, and all contact details at the relevant offices who can then take this further for you.

In terms of cost, it will vary with your country, this will be something for individuals to investigate further, but with the contacts list hopefully that will be straight forward. Please see this list for your country's Chamber of Commerce or other organising bodies, if however you have Motorsport contacts in your home country you have used previously with good results, then please email me [email protected] and I will be happy to update this list.

A note for all Racers travelling to or from the UK, if at all possible you can share transportation, if you can fit 3 Super Street Bikes in one trailer or 3 Junior Dragsters, you get the point, then you can divide the costs accordingly, and save money, I would urge you to discuss this with your Carnet provider as there are some restriction should you change the amount of vehicles being transported, nothing too problematic, it just requires a few changes to paperwork.

Callout for demo drag cars at Best of British.
19th February: Thanks to Santa Pod Raceway events coordinator Dan Melrose who has been in touch to tell us about a callout for demo drag cars:

Santa Pod is calling for 8-10 drag cars to do demonstration runs at our brand-new event, Best of British, on Saturday April 23rd. If it has a British body and/or British engine and runs quicker than 11.99, we want to hear from you! For anyone interested, please send an email to Dan in the Santa Pod office at [email protected] before Monday, April 11th including your personal best ET, photos, and a blurb about the car.

Santa Pod Raceway shutdown area being relaid.
18th February: Santa Pod Raceway are pleased to announce that works are under way to re-lay the entire shutdown area, from the finish line to the end of the track.

The old shutdown area was a patchwork of many different types of materials, some as old as the original airfield which had understandably deteriorated with age. The unevenness meant the ride was less than smooth in certain areas, a notorious dip just after the finish line, closely followed by a rise in the left lane would regularly focus the concentration of racers. The area at the very end was the oldest and therefore contained many untidy repairs which had to be addressed.

We are pleased to say that from a collaboration with a research group, and a significant investment from Santa Pod, we were able to undertake extensive works that will see approx. 13,000 square meters of brand new super smooth asphalt laid from end to end. 100m of the 780m shutdown will be marked out to match road markings found on motorways, research work in this area will take place outside of event days.

The works are being carried out by a specialist contractor with experience in installing high specification jobs across the country. The brief from Santa Pod was quite simple; smooth, smooth and smoother. The old shutdown showed as having some low spots and some high areas. Essentially, the high areas have been shaved off and the low points filled in with regulating course to ensure the final top coat of SMA is as smooth as can be.

The ‘wheels in the air’ photos from the shutdown may be a thing of the past, but we feel certain that racers will prefer the smoother ride. Works are due to be completed before the first RWYB on the 27th Feb, why not come along and try it out?

Pioneer stories: Marshall Dickson Racing.
18th February: Our stories about Ford Anglias of Yesteryear in UK drag racing and hot rod pioneers today features 1960s and 70s Anglia team Marshall Dickson Racing (first published in 2014).

John Dickson with Roger Marshall built one of the first Ford Anglia E93A-based Competition Altereds which they ran between 1968 and 1976. They also worked alongside John's brother Tony who imported and ran the UK's first Pro Stock car. John had a parallel role as a writer of race reports for many of the motorsport press titles current in the early 1970s. John's wife Carol-Ann also got involved in maintaining Santa Pod Raceway. Later, their names became synonymous with Marshall Dickson Performance, the speed parts business run not by them, but by John's late brother Tony between 1979 and his death in 2002. Roger and John remain great friends after over 60 years, despite living 150 miles apart.

John and Roger were interviewed during Dragstalgia 2014; we thank Dave Riswick of Eurodragster.com sponsor John Woolfe Racing for helping to arrange the interview and John Dickson for supplying archive photos and material. We have added 25 additional photos, kindly provided by Nick Pettitt, to the gallery including shots of Tony Dickson's Money Hungry.

The story of Marshall Dickson Racing is at this link. You can see our list of Pioneer stories at this link or by clicking on the link in the main menu.

Junior dragster rules changes proposed.
18th February: Many thanks to photojournalist Stefan Boman from Sweden for allowing us to run his story, published in the Bilsport web site, about a proposal for changes to Junior Dragster rules in Scandinavia. Often such proposals are kept in the racing community but in this case the proposer Lennart "Lelle" Olsson, who is behind Nitroz Motorsports (a key part of drag racing organisation in Scandinavia) has chosen to go public:

It may have been a good idea to hold back engine costs from Briggs & Stratton when the class was introduced 30 years ago. But over time, it has evolved to require expensive special parts where a new engine for Jr Modified costs over 50,000 kronor (£4,000) in the US.

There are lots of good, working technology from motorcycles, snowmobiles and not least go-karts that are not only cheaper but also easier to find both as new and used at home. The proposal is that you are allowed to use these as well, just as you are allowed to continue driving with a traditional driveline if you choose, says Lelle.

As every racer knows, the competition rules in Jr Dragster are that everyone competes using the handicap system where you set a dial-in time on which competition is based. Driving under your dial-in is a breakout and means that you lose even if you were first over the finish line. This way, everyone can compete on equal terms, no matter how fast your dragster is.

There will still be a technical framework that allows up to two cylinders and requires centrifugal coupling. There will also be an upper volume limit, a no to power adders, that the fuel must be petrol or methanol and there must be a maximum weight so that safety is not compromised by a heavier engine than what a chassis is designed for.

The competition element is also changing. Junior Dragster is the only class in the sport to have qualified for the driver's reaction time. This is now proposed to change to qualifying by driving as close to the time you set to base the handicap on (dial in time).

The changes are welcomed by Jr Dragster's drivers' association. Its chairman Kennet Christensen says that he is positive about all the changes that can result in more teams and racers, and simplifies the competition.

He also talks about the new class Junior Pro, which was run as a test at Mantorp Drag Revival in 2021 but is now entered in the rulebook. Simplified, you can say that Jr Pro will be like Super Comp light for you between 18 and 25 years. The cars are Jr Modified but with a fixed index of 7.90 at 201 meters and 7.50 as a safety breakout, Kennet continues.

Lelle points out that the changes are a result of courting from activists and that they have then been worked out together with chassis builders and other cutting-edge knowledge. The goal and hope is that all unions, organizers and countries in Europe will introduce them as common class rules.

Pictured left: Mira Radne is CEO of Radne Motor, which has been selling everything for karting since 1972. In the middle is the company's founder Leif Radne and on the right Lelle Olsson from Nitroz, who is now opening up the regulations for Junior Dragster to be able to use, for example, technology from karting. Pictured right is a Rotax 125 cc for go-kart of about 35 hp which also has an integrated rear axle, two-speed gearbox with paddles behind the steering wheel, slip clutch and built-in electric start for half the cost against the US components, an example of existing technology. Pictures courtesy Stefan Boman.

Editor's note: to our knowledge there has been no announcement official adoption of the proposed rule changes by any organising body for the sport in Europe. The proposals will undoubtedly be a topic for discussion during the coming season
.

Rivanazzano races announced.
18th February: Thanks to Enrico "Chicco" Bailo, Vice President of American Motors Pavia who has confirmed there will be two races in 2022 at the Italian track of Rivanazzano Raceway, based 50 miles south of Milan:

The first race will be the Spring Nationals on 13th-15th May and the second will be the Hills Race to be held on 9th-11th September. Both races have been held for a number of years, the Hills Race since 2004, however they were cancelled during both 2020 and 2021 due to Covid restrictions.

Renegade Racing Fuels' deal with Straightliners and Melbourne Raceway.
17th February: Trevor Duckworth of
Straightliners has announced that Renegade Racing Fuels have been chosen to be the Official Fuel Supplier for Straightliners and Melbourne Raceway in 2022. Trevor writes:

Jeff Ludgate is the owner of Track Stuff Ltd the European Distributor for Renegade Racing Fuels and Lubricants, Jeff has been supplying racers with fuel and tyres for more than fifteen years. In 2011 he formed Track Stuff Ltd which is 11 years old this coming week.

From a small hobby business Jeff has created a national race fuel supply company. At first Jeff started out as an agent for VP. After a few years VP appointed him as their National Distributor. After looking at numerous race fuel companies and testing various ranges of fuels Jeff decided to introduce Renegade Racing Fuels to the UK and Europe.

Renegade Racing Fuels are part of the multi-billion dollar Valor Oil Company in America. Renegade blends a first class range of race fuels, to suit everyone’s needs. Renegade racing fuels genuinely create real power and not just use those words as a catchphrase. Their fuels run cooler than the major players in the market giving real advantages to racers.

In a very short time from being unknown in this country Renegade Racing Fuels are now used by hundreds of racers and has become a nationally available product in the UK and a number of European countries.

Feedback from racers has been extremely positive with many running PBs since moving over to Renegade plus. During winter refreshes, engine builders have commented many times on how good their engines look when stripping them down, many saying that their engines still look as new as the day they were first built.

Straightliners and Melbourne Raceway are very pleased to have this fantastic deal from Jeff Ludgate and Renegade Fuels, we feel that this is a fantastic step forward for our Drag Racers at Melbourne Raceway and our Top Speed and Record contenders at Elvington Runway Two Six. With over 40 events in 2022 Jeff is going to be a busy boy.

Return of the Hulk.
16th February: Sportsman ET racer and member of Dual Fuel Racing Steve Mellors thanks those in the pits, and a sponsor company for saving his Hulk MX5 and enabling him to attend the Festival of Power on 15th-17th April:

Hulk MX5 Is back! After posting on Eurodragster.com earlier this month we received messages from all over the Santa Pod Raceway pits, the help and support has been absolutely outstanding. We were contacted by someone with a engine just after the announcement. We had a team talk about the job that was in front of us and said yes.

Hulk MX5 has dramatically changed. We have replaced the entire car's wiring loom, engine and gearbox, we fired up live on Tik tok on Saturday, fitting the main loom after solving some gremlins, and gaining 30 horsepower as a result of upgrades. We would like to thank every single race team racer, pit crew or racers who have messaged us and supported us. We cannot wait to return to the Pod.

A special mention to Ryan Williams of Dual Fuel Racing's pit crew for travelling by coach from Liverpool to help ensure the swap could happen in a reasonable time span. And of course a shout out to our fantastic sponsors over at Able Assist and printz4u.co.uk.

7707 Land Speed Racer gets gold.
16th February: Geoff Stilwell, owner/driver of the record-holding 7707 Land Speed Racecar announced two awards garnered at the recent Grand National Roadster Show, writes Tony Thacker:

“It has been a tough couple of years for land speed racing,” said Geoff, CEO and MD of Beech Underwriting Agencies, “we were only able to attend one event last year at El Mirage where we successfully made licensing passes. It was therefore great fun to get the car out and be a part of the Mick’s Paint display at this year’s Grand National Roadster Show held in Pomona, California.

“Showing is not like racing, the winner is subjective, nevertheless, we managed to get first place in the Unlimited class and received the award for Outstanding Engineering. The latter accolade is a huge testament to the crew at Mick’s who built and maintain the car including engine builder John Beck, Donny Cummins, Steve Davies, Mickey Larson, Pauly Rivera, Robin ‘Silky’ Silk, Tony Thacker and team leader Mick Jenkins.

7707 is also supported by our UK crew Nick Davies, Rob Loaring and Scott Barnes of ICE Automotive, Ron Hope’s Rat Trap Racing and CARS Recon Inc., and Mick’s Paint the builder/painter of the car.

“Our current plans are to attend the May 14-15 event at El Mirage in preparation for the August 6-12 Bonneville Speed Week.” Concluded Geoff.

Based on a highly modified 1927 Ford Roadster, 7707 is a purpose-built land speed racer that currently holds the A/Blown Fuel Rear-engine Modified Roadster record at 258.569 mph. 7707 was built entirely at Mick’s Paint, Pomona, CA, and features a 496 ci Brad Anderson-based engine built by John Beck of Vintage Hot Rod Design & Fabrication, Chico, CA. The 5,000 hp engine features Bill Miller pistons and rods, a Blower Shop 14-71 supercharger and Enderle injector with MSD ignition and Racepak data acquisition. The transmission is a B&J 2-speed and the rear end a Winters quick-change.

Adolph “Butch" Severloh.
15th February: We were sad to learn of the death of U.S. Top Fuel crew and engineer Adolph “Butch" Severloh. Nitro Revival sponsor Geoff Stilwell writes: "Not many people will know the name “Butch" Severloh but he was part of the “Over The Hill Gang” with Bill Schultz who won the Top Fuel Race at Indy in 1979. I am deeply shocked and saddened to say he suddenly passed away yesterday.

"The Over The Hill Gang Top Fuel car was based out of the S & S Engineering shop in Azuza, Los Angeles. Butch was the “THE” go to man to get things fixed or made. He helped the 7707 Landspeed Team on many occasions and I am very proud to say he was so kind to me. He had the most wicked Hot Rod powered by a Blown 428 Ford Cammer Motor. He had incredible talent and skill as a fabricator. When I first got 7707 we found a problem with the oil pan which we couldn’t just fix with buying a new one as it had been especially modified by Mike Kuhl. So Bob Muravez said we needed to see Butch. We took the pan with us and within 3 days he had completely repaired all the damage. It looked like new.

"He was a true gentleman, a friend to so many racers who I will miss greatly. God speed Butch and RIP my friend."

Butch is pictured in the 1979 U.S. Nationals winners circle with the rest of the Over The Hill Gang (rear row, with cowboy hat). The championship winning car appeared in the UK at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2008 (pictured right with driver Kelly Brown, former owner Sonny Diaz and owner Tom Curnow).

"The race group that houses at Bråvalla Raceway in Norrköping are the ones who make sure that we Street Weekare feel super during the inspection day and also on Street Weeks' first competition day which is Monday, July 11th.

"The area of Bråvalla is like cut and cut for Street Week, the area is planted and without disturbing bushes and trees, wherever you stand and talk, the course is just a head turn away.

"The event will start at 7pm on Monday 11th July, up with the rooster on Tuesday, first start is 09.00 to finish later in the afternoon at 16.00.

Pioneer stories: Gleadow family, part 7.
14th February:
Today's Pioneer story is part seven, the final instalment of the Gleadow family's story and history by brothers Brian, Mick and Bob, with Adam and Martin completing the saga. This part concentrates on Adam running in Fuel Altereds with the Nostalgia Fuel Altered Association from 2007 onwards.

Adam Gleadow, Bob's son, takes up the story, buying a chassis and building a blown alky altered to run in the Nostalgia Fuel Altered Association. The car won awards, ran in the sevens and in 2011 was a fire burnout star which led to it being featured in media outside the sport. A number of setbacks ensued - losing a body and suffering engine damage in 2012, with more mechanical woes in 2015. A full rebuild utilising the drivetrain from the late Ollie Burns' The Mob altered took a few years until Motor Psycho IV emerged in 2020 and made its first test passes in 2021.

Part seven of the Gleadows' story is at this link. You can see our list of pioneer stories at this link or by clicking on the link in the main menu.

Eurodragster.com would like to thank John Hunt and Nick Pettitt for recording, transcribing, editing and providing illustrations for each of our stories, and Clive Rooms for providing further information. Thanks also to Brian, Mick, Bob, Adam and Martin for giving their time to tell their story.

The next two postings of Pioneer stories on Friday and Monday next will revisit some Ford Anglias of the 1960s.

14th February: Happy Birthday for today to Rob and Pete Brown, aka The Marras of Wild Bunch fame, and to FWD racer and sometime organiser of private test days Scott Nobby Lewry. Have a great day guys.

Sick Week results.
13th February: On Friday the first ever Sick Week drag and drive event returned to its starting point at Bradenton Motorsports Park after five days and 900 miles road driving.

Congratulations to Europeans all of whom completed the event, Stefan Gustafsson winning overall in his Corvette C4 with a final day run and new PB of 6.538/217.63 his best of the event (event average 6.677/217.52). Mikael Borggren in his Volvo 240 Estate finished three hundredths of a second off the lead in his Modified class, running a 6.949/209.36 (event average 6.918/206.11). Expat Brit Stefan Rossi ran his '66 Chevy Nova to a 10.282/135.85 (event average 9.489/139.94) and won the Sickest of the Sick award (pictured with crew Laura Pugh and Jerome Turner). Brit Paul Mander ran an official 10.576/124.00 (event average 10.847/121.49) in his Volvo 740.

Paul commented "Sick week complete, qualified at every track, ran a PB at the end of the day with a 9.90/147 after driving a total over 3000 miles towing a trailer, special thanks to Matt Arruda for selling me a great car and thanks to Al Mac for joining me and making this a memorable few weeks, we have had a blast."

There was plenty of media coverage, including Youtube channels 1320 Video, Finnegan's Garage, ShopeShow and others. US web site Dragzine ran a piece on Stefan Rossi's crash and subsequent recovery to finish the event.

Will we see more Brits at next year's event? You bet we will! Members of Andy Bond's U6ly team attended to spectate as did Serck Motorsport head and Street Eliminator racer Graham Smith, no doubt they will encourage others.

You can see all the action, presented by Motion Raceworks, on Youtube by going to organiser Tom Bailey's channel. The final results of Sick Week are at this link.

Julie tests at Wild Horse, up for championship.
13th February: Expat Norwegian Julie Nataas will be contesting the 2022 NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster championship, racing with Randy Meyer Racing for the fourth successive year, and continuing with sponsor partner Oslo Tapet & Gulvbelegg (OTG). Julie tested yesterday at NHRA Nitro Spring Training from Wild Horse Motorsports Park, Arizona which can be seen at the Competition Plus Youtube Channel.

Last week Bilsport Norway announced that Julie will join Norway's Elite Motorsport Team, covering all motorsport disciplines for 2022.

“I’m so glad I get to continue this journey with Randy Meyer Racing,” said Julie, who finished fourth in national points in 2021. “I started racing in this class with Randy Meyer Racing. I have learned, failed, and succeeded with this team so there’s no one else I’d rather win a TAD world championship with than Randy Meyer Racing.”

In 2021, Randy Meyer Racing scored its third consecutive world championship when Rachel Meyer drove the NTK Sensors A/Fuel dragster to her first world championship. The team won the 2019 and 2020 titles with Rachel’s older sister, Megan, driving the NGK Spark Plugs dragster.

This season, Julie is determined to help RMR win its fourth consecutive title. She will be RMR’s primary driver for the season, as Rachel is stepping aside to focus on her family’s bracket racing program. The team also plans to bring in a couple of new drivers to license and run a race or two to help bring new blood into the sport, though the primary focus is chasing another championship.

“I don’t think I’m more or less motivated than last year, but last year I got really confident as a driver and that changed the game for me,” Nataas said. “Going into 2022, there’s only one thing on my mind: ‘world champion.’ I have no doubt we can get it. We just gotta keep doing what we’re doing.”

Julie kicked off her 2021 season with a win at the Gainesville regional race. She added regional wins at Norwalk, Indy, and Bowling Green before finishing the year with a runner-up finish at the NHRA Auto Club Finals in Pomona. The regional wins helped her secure her second NHRA North Central Region championship.

“We had a great 2021 season with a lot of regional event wins,” Julie said. “The one I remember the most is probably when Randy had me and Rachel race at two different racetracks the same weekend and we both won. Randy was at the track in Kansas with Rachel and I was in Indy with Randy tuning over the phone.”

Julie will race with continued support from Oslo Tapet & Gulvbelegg, a Norwegian manufacturer of floor coverings, carpet, linoleum, and wallpaper. Lucas Oil and Right Trailers have stepped up as associate sponsors on the nitro-injected dragster, which will sport a new look this season.

Julie is joined by other Europeans competing at the season-opening Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals from 17th-20th February, Ulf Leanders in Top Alcohol Funny Car and Markus Svensson in Stock Eliminator. You can see their progress through the usual channels including nhra.tv and Drag Race Central, as well as the official NHRA web site.

Pioneer stories: Tony Whitehouse - Part 2.
11th February: Our series of stories about UK drag racing and hot rod pioneers today again features hot rodder and drag racer Tony Whitehouse.

With close friend the late Mel Price, cousin Charlie Sutton and his friend 'Bruce' Turner, known as 'The Syndicate', Tony built a Pop called 'The Nail' with welding carried out by Ken Cooper. Learning as they went, the car came out first in July 1971 at Santa Pod Raceway, and ran until the end of 1972. The team then bought the rear section of Alan Blount and Dave West's Weekend Warrior, adding to this a Ford Flathead engine and parts from other racers. Continuing to use the same name, Tony bought the others out, completed the car as a rolling chassis and then sold it on. The Weekend Warrior III never saw the track in Tony's hands, but parts of it still live on in the Wild Bunch as Rob and Pete Brown's Wrathchild.

Part two of Tony's story is at this link, and part one is at this link. You can see our list of pioneer stories at this link or by clicking on the link in the main menu.

Nostalgia Superstock update.
11th February: Many thanks to UK Nostalgia Superstock organiser Don Scott who has sent in an update:

"It's NSS racer Bev Tyrrell's birthday today, not only is she a racer, but also she is our very hard working membership and finance secretary, I would like to send a very warm Happy Birthday message for her as she really does do so much.

"In other news, Bob Main's orange Superbird is back up and running after extensive work by Dave Billadeau, it went on the dyno at John Sleath's yesterday with some pretty impressive results. Bob has had some pretty bad luck over the past couple of seasons but at last I see him having a good season this year beginning with Springspeed."

We wish Bev a big Happy Birthday and can't wait to see Bob's reworked Superbird back on track.

Sick Week day 4 update.
11th February: Yesterday the Sick Week drag and drive event moved to South Georgia Motorsports Park. All the Europeans we are following made runs, Stefan Gustafsson maintaining his overall lead in his Corvette C4 with a 6.687/219.26 (event average 6.723/217.48). Mikael Borggren in his Volvo 240 Estate is only six thousanths of a second off the lead in his Modified class, running a 6.853/207.98 (event average 6.907/205.03). Expat Brit Stefan Rossi ran his wounded '66 Chevy Nova to a 11.787/98.84 (event average 10.063/129.67) and Paul Mander ran 10.881/131.56 (event average 10.937/120.65) in his Volvo 740.

Stefan Rossi, who had suffered bodywork damage on day 1 at Bradenton, reported "Another easy A to B pass today at SGMP. We also welded up our broken parachute mount and had to remove the center section for some maintenance prior to the run. It was a long day followed by 150 mile cruise to the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing and dinner with Al Mac and Paul Mander. 150 miles to go back to Bradenton in the morning. If all goes well, we plan to put the Radial Pro’s and parachutes back on and see what it will go without hitting the wall. Also thanks Doug Cook for the chute bag after one of ours got torn up on the wall."

From Ocala, the competitors drove back to Bradenton Motorsports Park for today's final day of activities. Good luck and stay safe to all competitors for today's race. You can see the action, presented by Motion Raceworks, live by going to the live stream link or on Youtube by going to Tom Bailey's channel. The stream will commence around 7pm GMT.

The results of yesterday's action at South Georgia Motorsport Park are at this link.

Dave Turner of the UK & European drag racing photos Facebook group says "This weekend the group is giving a chance for racers and teams to promote their sponsors and supporters to our 14.5k members, it's a great opportunity for them to give a shout out and say thanks." Could the keywords be Sponsor Saturday and Sponsor Sunday, we wonder?

NSA's new chapter.
10th February: Many thanks to Jerry Cookson, editor of the NSA periodical The Sprinter for writing to us about the National Sprint Association's new beginning:

In a not so surprising move at keeping British motorcycle sprinting alive the National Sprint Association has abolished the club’s Southern and Northern sections to make it into a countrywide association. The move was voted in at the recent AGM held at Meridan, Solihull last month.

Since the association’s formation in 1958 the club has been allowed to operate in sections organising quarter mile sprint events in the South West, Midlands as well as its traditional northern and southern areas since the very early sixties. Back then the NSA had unlimited use of some of the best British airfields to run its events. But with an all too steady decline in their usage this left the association with just a handful of venues to operate from, and sadly, many of which have been lost to housing developments or noise issues.

NSA and Straightliners will be working together to ensure that ‘grass roots’ sprinting and drag racing keeps a frim hold on its venues which are still available to them.

In the last three years Straightliners have developed what was once the old York Raceway into Britain’s second permanent drag strip since the closure in 2018 of Warwickshire’s Shakespeare County Raceway. Battling against the pandemic Melbourne Raceway has seen a tremendous progression since the laying of the eighth mile drag strip in 2020. And with a healthy fan base up in the north the track has some big events planned for 2022. Recently, foundations in the building of a new clubhouse have started, and are expected to be ready before the start of the season.

The NSA will be continuing to use Somerset’s eighth mile sprint strip at Westonzoyland Airfield as well as events at Devon’s Smeatharpe Airfield starting March 19th. Even the super smooth airstrip at Landbedr, mid Wales will echo to the sounds of real horsepower and performance rather than RAF training jets with a two day meet in May while three events have also been planned by Straightliners at the former RAF/British Army station at Dishforth Airfield, North Yorkshire in April, June and September.

The George Brown Memorial Sprint makes a welcome return to the calendar, but for the first time at Smeatharpe’s Dakota Raceway as part of a big motorsport weekend on Sunday 14th August. Saturday has been reserved for a static grass roots car and bike motorsports show. The first GBMS took place at Santa Pod Raceway in 1982 with further events held at Bradford’s Esholt Park, Bovingdon and Blyton airfields, London’s North Weald Drag Strip and Lincolnshire’s Lancaster Raceway, East Kirkby from 2016.

The NSA and Straightliners have now issued a complete championship calendar which is one of the most ambitious to date taking in events at Melbourne Raceway, Dishforth Airfield nr Thirsk, Santa Pod Raceway as well as the aforementioned 1/8th mile Sprint Strip of Westonzoyland and Smeatharpe’s Dakota Raceway. It is expected that dates will be allocated shortly to the ACU Sprint Championship as well as the NSA’s oldest and prestigious award – the Elgar Shield instigated by drag bike racer Ray Elgar. Competing with two classic Triumph’s last season 2021 overall champion was Somerset’s Japser Joy who not only rode a self-built Triumph Trident in the Classics class for the Gordon Colquhoun Trophy but has also ridden Mike Taylor’s Micky Taker Triumph drag bike which, in its time in the 80s, was quite a formidable opponent at NDRCs Long Marston Raceway.

Event details and entry forms will be available shortly from the NSA and Straightliners web sites as well as through links to NSA’s Facebook pages.

Sick Week day 3 update.
10th February: After day 2 of Sick Week 2022 presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive was cancelled due to rain, the 350 registered racers drove the 140 miles from Orlando Speedworld to Gainesville Raceway, where the racers were greeted by fog at the start of day 3.

Swede Stefan Gustavsson is leading the standings after organiser Tom Bailey withdrew after day 1. Stefan spun the tyres on his first pass but late in the day ran a superb 6.836/218.55 for an average of 6.741/216.585. Mikael Borggren in his Volvo 240 Estate ran 7.014/203.49, a great time but bettered in class by Rick Prospero's 6.907/203.86. So Mikael is second in Modified by five hundredths with an average of 6.935/203.550. Everything to play for there.

Expat Brit Stefan Rossi in his Chevy Nova managed to get to Gainesville despite a brush with the wall on day one, and recorded a conservative 10.549/138.12 for an average of 9.092 141.990, which placed him ninth in the Unlimited Iron class. Paul Mander ran a 11.366/113.17 for an average of 10.966/115.195 which placed him and team mate Al McSweeney 27th in the DYO category which has a 10.00 cutoff and Paul reported no problems so far.

The results of yesterday's action at Gainesville Raceway are at this link.

The event then drove another 140 miles to South Georgia Motosports Park for today's activities, stopping in a few cases after attracting the interest of traffic cops. Good luck and stay safe to all competitors for today's race. You can see the action, presented by Motion Raceworks, live by going to the live stream link or on Youtube by going to Tom Bailey's channel. The stream will commence around 3pm GMT. Other coverage worth exploring is on Kyle Loftis's 1320 Video Facebook page.

Sick Week update.
9th February: Many thanks to Paul Mander for sending us an account of how the Sick Week drag and drive event is going for him and Al McSweeney:

"Our 1990 Volvo 780 Bertone coupe is fitted with a 6 litre gen 4 iron block from a 2005 Chevy Silverado. The engine has a stock bottom end, but has an ARP bolt upgrade with a performance hydraulic roller camshaft, lightened ceramic coated pistons, 317 heads and a BTR intake and fuel injection.

"It has a Turbo 400 3 speed transmission, with a transbrake, Bolt Together 9” Hughes converter, a 8.8 Ford rearend LSD and lightened half shafts.

"As we do not have an NHRA Competition licence and the car only has a chassis tag to 10.00, we cannot run quicker than that and we cannot go faster than 135mph. I ran the car Sunday out of competition in test 'n tune, and went 9.99/148 but on Monday, first day of Sick Week, we qualified with a 10.565/117.22 (shut off early) at Bradenton."

After successfully qualifying, Al and Paul drove overnight to Orlando however the second day of Sick Week had to be cancelled due to rain.

Other European competitors had mixed fortunes on Day 1. The Volvo Estate driven by Mikael Borggren ran an amazing 6.855/203.61 to go fourth overall, incredible when you consider it looks bone-stock, and the Corvette C4 of Stefan Gustavsson was second overall with 6.645/214.62. However expat Brit Stefan Rossi of ACE Racing Engines got into trouble when a radiator hose came off his turbo LS engine in his Chevy Nova, going through the finish line at 7.635/145.86. Stefan did a great job of avoiding a big incident and the damage was so superficial, he was able to continue on the drive to Orlando after repairing his engine which new ignition box.

You can see the stream of Sick Week Day 1 at Bradenton Motorsports Park by going to this Youtube link. You can also get complete Day 1 results in Excel spreadsheet format by going to this link. Event organiser Tom Bailey was quickest with 6.269/236.38 but has now withdrawn from the event with cylinder head damage.

The event moves to Gainesville Raceway today and you can follow the action on sickthemagazine.com.

We were saddened to hear of the death on 1st February of Pro Stock Bike racer and 1993 European Champion Veli "Jappe" Malin from Finland. Simo Patoharju writes:

Jappe started drag racing with a Suzuki in Street Bike class in 1985, winning the championship in his first year. By 1987 he had moved to Pro Stock Bike, riding a Suzuki for three years, then buying a Kawasaki from the legendary Dave Schultz, running quicker than him in a couple of NHRA races at the start of 1990.

He ran at Avon Park Raceway in 1992 and 1994, and in 1993 won five out of the first seven races, securing the championship before the final event. In the late 1990s, Jappe moved on to preparing rally cars for Honda Finland, followed by 10 years in Lappland working on sleds, then moving back to the south of Finland where he undertook engineering projects and attended the occasional race, giving advice to racers.

Our deepest condolences go to Jappe's family and friends. We have posted a full tribute written by Juge Aalto, Busse Lahtinen, Jarmo Markkanen (who supplied photos) and Simo Patoharju which you can see by clicking here or via our Features, Interviews and Tributes section. If you would like to add your personal tribute, please send it to [email protected].

Pioneer stories: Gleadow family, part 6.
7th February: Today's Pioneer story is part six of the Gleadow family's story and history by brothers Brian, Mick and Bob. This part concentrates on running in Top Methanol Dragster, then the story is taken up by Adam Gleadow who started in Junior Dragsters in 2000 and had graduated to Super Pro ET by 2007.

In 1997 Eurodragster.com sponsor Fay Fischer joined the team as driver of the Top Methanol Dragster, staying for two years with a new car in 1998. Dave Wilson took over the driving seat and the team ran the FIA tour in 1999. At the end of the year, Bob stepped down from the TMD team, at which point son Adam was wanting to start racing in Junior Dragster...

The Gleadow family's story will be told in seven parts bringing it to the present day.

Part six of the Gleadow's story is at this link. You can see our list of pioneer stories at this link or by clicking on the link in the main menu.

Eurodragster.com would like to thank John Hunt and Nick Pettitt for recording, transcribing, editing and providing illustrations for each of our stories, and Clive Rooms for providing further information.

What are you doing here?
7th February: Many thanks to photojournalist Andy Willsheer for sending us details of a close encounter:

A social media shoutout brought a goodly turnout of petrolheads to Dowsetts Classic Cars in Colliers End, Herts., where the company was introducing an innovative road-legal single seater. What made the Saturday affair particularly interesting for this scribe was bumping into one of the guests, a certain Ian King, British Drag Racing Hall of Fame inductee and arguably best known on the straight-line scene for many years through his multi-time FIM European Top Fuel Bike Championship titles and as co-owner of Puma Engineering.

He’s currently employed by Peterborough-based Radical Sportscars, an entity that this year celebrates its silver jubilee producing a line of world-beating racing cars that are sold worldwide. And in case you’re wondering who the chaps are with him in the accompanying image, they are Ant Anstead, in the centre of the pic - a long-time friend of Ian’s and, incidentally, someone who has accompanied him to Santa Pod before his global TV career took off - and Mike Brewer (right), both of whom have gained particular renown through presenting small-screen motoring television programmes such as Wheeler Dealers both here and in the USA.

7th February: We'd like to wish a very Happy Birthday for today to Nostalgia Funny Car owner Rob Elsom, to Top Fuel Bike racer Thomas Pettersson and Pro Modified crew member and wife Belinda Nicholson, have a great day all.

Sick Week: how to watch, who to follow.
6th February: As mentioned in our news update on 19th January, UK racers Paul Mander and Al McSweeney will be heading over to the US to compete in the Sick Week 'drag-and-drive' event which starts tomorrow. Organised by Tom Bailey of Drag Week fame, the 350 entries start at Bradenton Motorsports Park on 7th February after today's registration day, then move to Orlando Speedworld, Gainesville Raceway, South Georgia Motorsports Park and then back to Bradenton on 11th February. You will be able to see live streaming of the event on Youtube or via the Sick Week website. Also to get latest updates go to the Sick the Magazine Facebook page or join the Sick The Mag FB group.

As well as Paul and Al Mc, there will be other Europeans involved. Expat Brit Stefan Rossi who runs ACE Racing Engines in Torrance, California grew up in the world of VW's which his dad was into, and after a spell in the army and in Canada, founded Aircooled Engineering in the West Midlands. In 2019, he and his partner Laura took the big step of relocating ACE Racing Engines from the UK to the USA. Stefan is now a LS specialist, entering a ‘66 Chevy Nova with 3000hp LS Next2 twin turbo engine. Also entered are Swedes Mikael Borggren from Kalmar who has a sleeper Volvo 240 estate, veteran of three Hot Rod Drag Weeks, and Stefan Gustafsson with a Corvette C4 which solves the problem of trunk space with a roof box as well as the obligatory trailer. Both are capable of six second passes.

Not shy of promotion, Tom Bailey claims that Sick Week will have "the most six-second proven and six-second capable cars ever assembled for a drag-and-drive event (and yes, even a five-second one)." We will report back on what we hear...

Pioneer stories: Tony Whitehouse - Part 1.
4th February:
Our series of stories about UK drag racing and hot rod pioneers today features hot rodder and drag racer Tony Whitehouse.

Tony Whitehouse started working as a truck driver, later getting into American cars and working on automatic transmissions for a company that was eventually known as Mr Shifter and later ATP. He was with the company for 33 years, during which he got involved with hot rods and drag racing, first joining the BHRA in 1965. As Staffordshire area BHRA rep, Tony got to know a lot of local hot rodders and racers. By 1970 Tony had got his first road going hot rod, a Ford Pilot and with help from longtime friend Ken Cooper he fitted the Allard-Ford drivetrain from his donor car the ex-hill climb 'Clanger Special'. Drag racing was still a twinkle in his eye...

Part one of Tony's story is at this link. You can see our list of pioneer stories at this link or by clicking on the link in the main menu.

International Drag Racing Hall of Fame to be streamed.
4th February: British Drag Racing Hall of Fame member and International Drag Racing Hall of Fame board member "Big Daddy" Don Garlits has announced that this year's IDRHoF induction ceremony will, for the first time, be streamed live on the IDRHoF Facebook page, and on NHRA's streaming service nhra.tv on 10th March at 22:30 GMT. This year's ceremony marks the induction of BDRHoF founder Stu Bradbury into the IDRHoF.

In a preview of the event on Joe Castello's WFO Radio podcast, Don said on Wednesday: "Stu contributed so much to drag racing in England and internationally, he was a wonderful guy, I'm so glad the selectors picked him this year, unfortunately he passed away in July 2020 and his wife Bev and daughter Genna will be coming over and accepting his award." Joe said that as well as founding the BDRHoF Stu was chief starter at Santa Pod Raceway from 1968 to the late 80s, and that there will be an (alleged) proclamation read from the British Government. Stu and Don are two of the five people who are members of both the BDRHoF and IDRHoF.

To see the whole of Don's assessment of all the 2022 IDRHoF inductees go to the WFO Youtube Channel or hear it via your podcast app (Castbox is your editor's preferred app).

A new tune for Perkins.
2nd February: It is not often that we get to hear about the extra-curricular activities of racers - we all just assume that they spend all of their time away from the track in the workshop - but even so, we can't say that we would ever have expected to receive a CD of music featuring the vocal stylings of UK Comp Eliminator racer Kev Perkins. Kev tells us that his CD, named Heart and Soul, is now available to order.

"I was a choirboy when I was about eight", Kev said of his first experience of singing in public. "As a choirboy you got eleven bob a month and that paid for your fags and everything! I also did Gang Shows with the cub scouts at Islington Town Hall. Later when I was at the Engineering Industry Training Centre a couple of guys were in a band and I did bits and bobs with them. If the likes of Rob Loaring, Charlie Draper and Pete Wallis had cottoned on to my singing at the time they'd have ripped me a new one!"

Singing then took a back seat for Kev until about twelve years ago. "I would go to a local pub and sit in a corner drowning my sorrows. There was karaoke and I kept getting asked if I was going to get up and sing or not, and after the fourth time I decided that I would."

Finally getting up and singing was the start of a friendship with singer and karaoke host Kat Hall. "Kat was singing and I thought what a lovely person", said Kev. "Over four or five years I started going to all of her gigs around Essex and London and helped out as a roadie. It was Kat who gave me the courage to stand up and sing in front of people without being drunk first.

"Kat encouraged me and we get a good sound from her gear. Some of the pubs want you to do a half hour set before the karaoke starts so I join in with Kat. A couple of racing colleagues have come along to the odd gig and been surprised at what they heard. It's a good confidence builder... maybe they're just being nice but the more people say it's good the more confidence I get."

The logical next step was a trip to a recording studio. "I always liked the idea of going into a studio and wailing like a cat, and Kat helped with that", said Kev. "We were in the studio for a day. If you notice me struggling to hold a note that's because I've got COPD which doesn't help... that probably started from smoking fags at the age of eight!

"Having done a CD we thought why not sell them to raise funds for the race car, and if people want to come around to my pit and take the piss or tell me what they think then they're welcome!"

Heart and Soul contains fourteen tracks including standards such as Stand By Me, The Great Pretender, Sealed With A Kiss and Never Can Tell. The cover features a picture of Kev's Oldsmobile race car taken by Callum Pudge. "On the CD Cry To Me is the song all the girls want", said Kev. "It's from Dirty Dancing; I've quite often sung that and ended up with gyrating girls in a train behind me and that wasn't because of my looks!". For live dates and more information join the Tomkats Roadshow Facebook group.

Heart and Soul is available directly from Kev for £10 plus £1.60 shipping. You can PayPal Kev or E-Mail queries to [email protected]. Remember folks, each CD sold means that Kev spends more time at the track.

Thanks to former editor Tog for his time interviewing Kev.

RAD Design Lines - 'Mr Six' colouring competition.
1st February: Many thanks to Darren West of Power Race Graphics who has announced another colouring competition, based on a historic Funny Car built and raced by the legendary Dennis Priddle. Darren writes:

To help kill some of the winter blues, it’s competition time again at RAD Design Lines! We have teamed up with longtime drag racing photographer and author Keith Lee, and offer the exclusive chance to win a copy of Keith’s fabulous book - ‘Mr Six’ - The Story of British Drag Racing Legend Dennis Priddle!

One of the pages of our new RAD Design Lines colouring book - ‘Funny Cars’ features the 1975 Chrysler/Hillman Avenger body style Dennis made popular. As a nod to this legendary racer we included it in the colouring book. All you have to do for a chance to win the ‘Mr Six’ book is design and colour-up that Avenger page - if you haven’t already. Then just take a phone snap and post it on either the RAD Design Lines facebook or instagram page. Borrow a mate’s book if you haven’t got one, or grab a copy of the book from the RAD Design Lines web site at £7.99, where you’ll find 16 more pages of fantastic funny cars from all eras to design the graphics and create the colour schemes for.

We have a very special judge joining Keith to look through the entries - ace painter Jeff Glasser, who designed and painted the Avenger, among other funny cars and dragsters campaigned by Dennis Priddle! So unleash that creative flair, and get those entries over to us at RAD Design Lines. Post them up on our socials - or you can message or email them to us.

Final date for entries is February 28 - and we will announce the lucky winner in early March. Please note - the competition is only open for UK entries.

Entries and any queries can be sent to Darren at [email protected], RAD Design Lines on Facebook and rad.designlines on Instagram.

Look out for Keith Lee's new drag racing book launching in 2022 - 'John Hobbs and the age of the twins'! Another brilliant title to look forward to from this drag racing author!
